A woman (Evelyn Keyes) whose husband was lost on the Arizona during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, hears that he is actually the owner of The Polynesian Paradise, a nightclub in Hawaii, and that he has been imprisoned for killing a crime lord. To find out if it actually is him, she arrives in Honolulu where her guide to local culture is a dotty cabdriver (Elsa Lanchester). The police chief arranges for her to see the mystery man (Wendell Corey), but when the prisoner learns that his current girlfriend (Nancy Gates) has been murdered, he escapes. As he searches for his girlfriend's killer, the wife searches for him in the bad part of Honolulu known as Hell's Half Acre, where she finds herself in the middle of an underworld power struggle of blackmail and violence.
On location filming in Hawaii at Don the Beachcomber’s (who served as technical advisor on the film), Nu’uanu Pali, River Street, etc. gives this classic film noir realism and authenticity. There are also scenes of authentic local hula dancers and The Kaumakapili Choir singing “Polynesian Rhapsody”.
